Platform

The Student Association has lost sight of its purpose -- to serve the students. And more so than serve, its purpose is to represent. The SA is not representative of the GW student body, yet its job is to represent the students inside and outside of the GW community.

In terms of a platform, I have the same one as everyone else – fix 4-Ride, fix J Street, fix this, fix that, etc, etc. The job of the SA President is to be an advocate of all students on campus. The most important issues to students are the ones that I will support, and that is that.

More specifically, I am concerned about the little things. Like the fact that postering for Student Orgs is not allowed in Columbian Square. Or the fact that the SA logo is required on posters for events co-sponsored by the SA. Does the SA really need credit for everything they give money to? Isn’t its job to help us? Why do they need that positive reinforcement?

The SA has an incredible amount of potential to make things better for students. There needs to be less favoritism in the financial process and more fairness. Student organizations should not receive $40,000 for one event compared to $350 for another. Financial allocation should be based on need, not prestige. There needs to be cooperation between student orgs and the SA – SA Senators should sit in on student org board meetings, and vice versa. They need to understand each other for this fairness to occur.

There also needs to be more transparency. For example, there was recently an SA Senate meeting to discuss issues with J Street. Present were several high-up GW Dining Services officials. Why was there no email sent to the student body about this? Students in the SA are not the only students who care about this issue. If there had been just one email, turnout would have been bigger and more opinions would have been shared.

I would like to conclude that I am just a student. My campaign slogan is “just a student.” That is, I am not running for this position as practice for a future career. I do not have any future political aspirations. I am just a student. I am not in a fraternity, and I am not in the SA. I am passionately involved in one student organization and have worked my way up to become a co-Executive Producer of 14th Grade Players. I get average grades and like Star Wars. I am just a student.
